Treat Each Gift as a Learning Opportunity for All

• 10:30After working in professional development for years, Leyton came to UBCO to design the middle years integrated methods and philosophy teacher education program.
• 12:30At UBCO, Leyton designed a teacher education program that was place-based and place-conscious by upholding the belief that students and teachers are curriculum co-creators that learn with and from each other.
• 14:15Leyton’s middle years program design was extended into UBCO’s summer institute for all teacher candidates when four professors of different courses came together to create an interdisciplinary learning experience that inquired into themes like diversity and literacy.
• 20:05Low-stakes high-yield learning opportunities for aspiring teachers involve working with students in classrooms to design and deliver a lesson with a non-evaluative coach at their side.
• 25:25Leyton came into inclusive education through his experience of growing up with parents who are blind and working in a middle school program for students whose needs were not being met in mainstream schooling.
• 29:40Inclusive education means embracing diversity by treating each gift as a learning opportunity for all.
• 31:40Inclusion 2.0 is when teachers from different cultural background collaborate to design learning experiences for their students.
• 35:55Leyton is disrupting academic research through “Pracademics”, or the belief that we learning through practice and situated in context, so he aims to co-create meaning as a community engaged researcher.
• 38:25Leyton co-led a project called “Through a Different Lens” with SD67 in Pentiction to ask, “Who’s a student in my class who is at risk of not succeeding?”
• 40:35The most recent iteration of the project inquires into relational accountability with a collaborative planning team that includes five Indigenous and five settler members to co-create meaning through two-eyed seeing.
